The Unique Heritage building
The seed of the Main Library was sown in 1920 with a modest collection of 200 books, coinciding with the founding of Sri Meenakshi College. Initially, the library was housed in the eastern wing of the Administrative Building. In 1959, it moved to its present premises, marking a new chapter in its history.
The Unique Heritage Building The heritage building of the Main Library was designed by the internationally reputed architects Messrs. Prynne, Abbot, and Davis. It was named after the distinguished statesman, former Vice-Chancellor, and eminent scholar of Annamalai University — Dr. Sir C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar — in recognition of his invaluable services to the nation and to this University. The present building was inaugurated by His Excellency Shri Bishnuram Medhi, the then Governor of Madras, on 22nd October 1959. Spanning a built-up area of approximately 36,000 sq. ft., the structure is designed in an “H” shape, featuring a well-controlled entrance lobby, a spacious Central Reading Hall, Reference Hall, Periodicals Hall, and a Bindery in the eastern wing. The western wing houses the Administrative Sections and Reprographic Section, while open-access stack rooms are provided on both wings. The Infonet Lab and E-Journals Section offer dedicated access facilities for research scholars and staff members, enabling them to browse and utilize a wide range of e-resources.
